Our Baseball Fanatic's Dream Come TRUE!
All summer long, we have watched Carter develop into quite the baseball fanatic. He started asking to watch SportsCenter in the morning instead of cartoons, studying and reading his binder of baseball cards instead of books at naptime and turned literally everything and anything into a bat and ball. His favorite player for the past two years has been Matt Holliday who started out on the Colorado Rockies. At the beginning of this season, he was traded to the Oakland A's and then again to the St Louis Cardinals. So, throughout the summer, Carter not only religiously tracked how he (Matt Holliday) and his team were doing but also how his favorite team, the Colorado Rockies, were doing. He memorized players, team colors, jersey numbers, schedules, game times, you name it! It was quite entertaining.
As mentioned in an earlier post, Ty had a very busy summer and most of our "vacation time" was never used due to the amount of time he was putting in at work. Summer finally ended and all of us were looking forward to a low key September but then news came from the boss that Ty was going to have to leave us around the end of the month for some training out in St Louis. We immediately checked to see if the Cardinals were going to be in town and if so, the kids and I were going to go and tag along. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were going to be out of town. However, yes! you guessed it! They were going to be in Colorado versing THE ROCKIES! The planning wheels started rolling and my wonderful husband organized a whole weekend visit down to Colorado with an additional week visit back home to Wyoming.
We wanted they entire plan to be a surprise for Carter . Every day Carter would ask one or both of us who we would be cheering for when the Cardinals played the Rockies (since he already knew the schedule date.) We continued to play it off and "forget" that the game was even coming up. Of course, after answering his daily question he'd give his choice team for the day which alternated between the two. It took everything inside both of us not to scream the news to him but for all of our sanity, we continued to keep quiet. The weekend before we were to leave, the kids and I came down with the stomach bug and horrible colds. Carter caught the cold the worst and missed several days of school that week. He had a fever of 103 for 3 days straight and one particular night, he was feeling really down. Ty and I gave each other the look and knew just the right medicine for our little man. He was more than excited and miraculously he was feeling worlds better by the morning.
The day before the game, the kids and I met Ty in Denver and then drove down to Colorado Springs for the afternoon and evening. We stayed with the Sherman's (the family that I nannied for when we lived there) and even had an adult date night with the two of them. Get this, Alex who was 4 when I started watching her- now 12, stayed home and watched OUR kids! Talk about full circle! We had the privilege to dine at Bill's bistro, Amuze, which was hands down, THE GREATEST MEAL OF OUR LIVES! To anyone within a day or two's drive from Palmer Lake, Colorado... please do me a favor and book a reservation. Now. 719-481-1700. I promise you will never experience anything like it!
Okay so, the dinner and visit to the Springs was enough to make my week/month/year but, we did have a 5 year old who wouldn't stop asking if it was game time yet. So, as the next morning rolled in, it prompted the goodbyes and a small car trip down to the Air Force Academy. Ty quickly showed the kids a few places around campus, some important planes and the chapel. Before heading out of town, Ty insisted on a pit stop to Chipotle and then it was straight to Coors Field.
We wanted to get to the field in plenty of time to watch batting practice and all of the pregame. We were meeting my parents, Brandon and Julie and Ty's parents at the game also, so we wanted to be able to visit with all of them for awhile too. Carter started out a bit overwhelmed but in no time, he was screaming at players for autographs. Ty caught a foul ball during batting practice and in the middle of the first inning, Ty and the kids appeared on the jumbo-tron in center field. Needless to say, it was a fabulous evening and memories were made! The Rocks didn't win but as Carter put it, "At least they scored some points!"
The next day we traveled up to Wyoming and had a great week hanging out with family. Ty accomplished a lot of golf and some much deserved time away from work! It was a long drive back to Idaho and rough transition back to reality, as always.
We are looking forward to a busy October and getting to celebrate the month and all of it's festivities with our Daddy home this year. Enjoy the pictures and Happy Fall Ya'll!
