Montessori Day

Carter's classroom recently had each child bring a parent or friend in for Montessori Day. On this special day, they were able to show us what took place on a typical day in their classroom, do a craft with us, make us a snack and then choose "shelf work" for us to complete BUT only after they gave us the "lesson" on how to do it. It was a neat experience not only for me but for my little sidekick too! Whitleigh loves any chance she gets to go into Carter's classroom!

They started their day with Mrs. Ray very quietly saying (yeah...saying, not shouting!) "Stop, Look and Listen" and the room fell completely silent. I was amazed! She told them to pick up what they were doing and to join her on the ellipse (big round tape circle in the middle of the room). After doing the calendar, weather and number chart they all turned and said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang their flag song.
"Flag of America,
Red, White and Blue.
Flag of America,
A SALUTE we give to you!"
Then, they showed us how good they were with their sight words. They said all 25 of them AND beat the timer!
Then we did our craft together.

Ta-DA!!!

Here is my snack that Carter made for me. I very graciously offered it to Whitleigh just because that small voice in my head never fails to scream, "NOOOOOO!!!" when it comes to eating something prepared by a 5 year old on a school table. :-D

This is the "shelf work" that Carter put his name on for me. I had to walk around the class to try and find it and when I did he told me, "it's the hardest shelf work in the whole class! HAAAHHAAA!" Thanks little man!
He gave me my lesson and I basically had to find matching ending sounds to little flash cards. There were a few cards that we got hung up on because we weren't quite sure what the picture was trying to tell us. I had to smile because I knew why he thought it was going to be so "hard" for me! Then it was free choice time and naturally Carter goes and grabs a book and Whitleigh took a seat next to him. He read us both a few stories and then it was time for us to leave. The enitre morning I couldn't wipe the smile off his face. He was so proud of himself and loved having the right to be my teacher for the day! I was so proud at how he handled himself and the amount of patience he gave Whitleigh since she felt like she was just as big as everyone else in the room!
